Belait

The Belait Region is famous for the fact that it gave birth to Brunei's modern-day economic success - it was here that Brunei's oil and gas industries began. Everything started on 5th April 1929, when drilling prospectors first struck oil here.

There are strange-looking buildings glistening in the sun, where the oil is refined, with enormous storage facilities for the finished product, with continously-lit burn-off flames. We can see small housing developments of pleasant houses - the homes of well-paid oil-industry employees. There's a symbolic monument to a billion-dollar barrel of oil. This is all on the coast, in the oil town of Seria. If we move inland we find pristine rain-forest, almost untouched. It's an ideal location for eco-tourism, with the villages of locals - the famous Long Houses of the Aiban (Iban) people at Labi Village.
