From sunset, the onset of evening seems to make Singapore slip on different clothes – bathed in different lights, neon signs and laser beams. The streets and embankments are thronging with people out for a walk, or just enjoying a little cool evening air. For a city located at the equator, cool air is often in short supply during the day.

There’s no shortage of places to spend the evening. There are concerts and theatres, while the enormous shopping centres operate through until late in the evening. The event which crowns the eveningtime for both locals and tourists alike is supper – and there’s a huge number of options to choose from. There are cafes and restaurants serving many cuisines, and at all prices, in all of Singapore’s regions. Tourists often prefer hotel buffets, or the restaurants in the Chinese or Arabic quarters... or along the Singapore River embankment.

One of the most popular places to spend an evening is the historic Clark Quay along the Singapore River. The renovated C19th buildings here house a great variety of restaurants and night clubs. Live music beckons passers-by from each doorway until late in the evening, while riverboats done up like Chinese junks offer river trips.

There’s every kind of music here – from guitar singers to blues, rock or Latin.

People often call Singapore a city built vertically. The upper floors in many of the highrises are home to different restaurants. It can be very enjoyable to have breakfast with a panoramic view from the sixtieth floor.

In the evenings there are bar restaurants on the roofs of tall buildings, or with open verandas with views of Singapore by night. One place for dancing is the fashionable 1-Altitude Club – located 282 metres above ground, on the 63rd floor.

If your taste is for mini-brewery beer made on the premises, then try Bar LeVel 33, on the 33rd floor.

Another option is enjoying some rather pricey cocktails by laser-light in one of the many night-clubs – many of which are located on the uppermost floors of five-star hotels.

The night is yet young, and your evening can continue in one of Singapore’s many nightclubs. Just as in any major world city, clubs open and close with great regularity, and the information in guidebooks may be out-of-date... while others have been open for decades. One of the oldest and most famous is the Zouk Club, which opened in 1991 in a former warehouse that was built in 1919. The club has been well-liked by European and American mass-media as one of the best dance clubs in the world – and it’s been consistently upgraded over the years. You can frequently see major world music stars on stage.
