Northern Laos is also called Historic Laos. And it really is historic – this is where the city of Luang Phabang is located, the former royal city of Lan Xang – to which, in reality, the whole history of modern Laos can be traced back. This is where we find the Plain of Jugs – the most extraordinary example of ancient architecture. It was these areas which suffered most extensively during the American war on the peninsular. There are thousands of tons of unexploded weapons lying in the soil here.

The provinces of Northern Laos are: Xieng Khouang, Houaphan, Luang Phabang, and Xaignabouli.
