The Iban (or Aiban) are indigenous people of Borneo, long renowned for the bravery in battle. Among the Iban it was long held that to become a man, you had to kill an enemy in battle, and bring his head back still dropping blood – and it had to be the head of a warrior.
As head-hunters they traditionally lived in Long Houses, where a large extended family might all life under one roof. In practice space in a Long House is divided into many rooms which all adjoin a central corridor hall, and the narrow rooms offer a lot of space within the house. The house itself has a pragmatic rectangular shape. You can see this kind of house in many places around the country. The ones most popular with tourist visitors are in the village of Labi, in Tutong Region.
