Billionth Barrel Monument
Near to the town centre of Seria, on the banks of the South China Sea, is a monument to a billion-dollar barrel of oil - erected on the spot where prospectors first struck oil in Brunei. The monument was designed by a Bruneian architect, and erected with funds donated by Shell Petroleum. It can be seen for miles around from the endless beaches on the shoreline. Many of the beaches look out towards offshore pumping stations that have been operating for decades, pumping oil from a depth of several hundred metres below the sea floor.
