Cemetery and funeral in the city of Granada
The city cemetery of Granada is the oldest in Nicaragua. The cemetery is unusually beautiful and richly decorated and is considered a national treasure.
The richest tombs and mausoleums, naturally, belong to the rich.
They are grouped around the chapel near the entrance. As you move away from the chapel, the tombs become less and less decorated.
Many of the beautiful marble statues that stand on the tombs were created by Italian sculptors in Italy and sent to Granada. Some are created by local artists.
Nine former Nicaraguan presidents were buried here, along with other famous people who contributed to the political and cultural heritage of Nicaragua.
The funeral ritual in the city of Granada has a peculiarity – the coffin is taken on a horse-drawn carriage.
A walking procession follows the carriage.
In one of the funeral processions there were two carriages with two coffins. My guide suggested that it could be relatives who died on the same day, possibly due to an accident.
Musicians follow the procession by car.
Some musicians come by bike.
