Champasak

The independent kingdom of Champasak thrived here in the C18th – one of three kingdoms which were later combined intot the Kingdom of Lan Xang, that later became Laos. Champasak is now the southernmost provice of Laos, squashed in between the Thai and Cambodian borders. The regional capital, Pakse, was set up during the French colonisation in 1905. It’s one of the mostvisited provinces in the country, mostly due to its natural beauty – national parks, waterfalls, the Bolaven Plateau, and nearly 4000 islands in the Mekong River. There is also historical interest at Wat Phou – the most important temple complex in Laos.
