Several areas here are completely forested – where we find large vertical stones that rise up to three metres in height. No-one knows their original role or age.

The local Khmu believe they once served as carriers, while there are other legends about the stones which suggest they may once have served a ritual purpose. In that connection it’s worth noting that many Khmu villages still have sacrificial pillars preserved from olden times.

Some of the stone slabs appear to close-off holes in the ground.
