The Great Wall

Eight kilometres from the town of Thakhek – the capital of the Khammouane province – there’s a remarkable man-made edifice. It’s the remains of a stone wall, known as the Great Wall, which runs for fifteen kilometres, and rises to 15 metres in height in places. This wall ran along the Mekong River, situated around a kilometre from the bank, and now only fragments of it remain, extensively overgrown by the jungle. The actual name given to this wall is now not known – it was built in the C6th-C8th, when the region was still a part of the Sikhottabong Kingdom.
The local authorities are planning to make some clearings along parts of the wall, to enable visitors to get a closer look.
