The first sections of the Singapore Metro were built from 1983 onwards, and the first station on the MRT opened in November 1987. The construction of the metro was an important strategic and economic priority, of crucial importance to the city's population. Without its metro, Singapore wouldn't be Singapore. The network features 113 stations, with 150 kilometres of track – putting almost any point in the city-state within walking reach of one of its stations.
The MRT, or Mass Rail Transit, exists alongside the much smaller LRT, or Light Rail Transit – which runs to more outlying new regions.
