Orchard Road
This once-rural road, which runs between gardens and cemeteries, slowly became the main shopping and leisure street of Singapore from the 1970s onward. Today it comprises two kilometre of upscale retail space, hotels and restaurants, including 800,000 square metres of shopping and leisure complexes, and a boulevard where you can take a stroll. The pedestrian underpasses have become underground shopping areas, connecting the shops on both sides of the road with the metro station.
It’s the traditional sales that bring out the crowds of shoppers. There are also one-off mass events, which are organised during national holidays – or promotions like Pedestrian Night, and fashion shows.null
There are many different, and often unusual sculptures placed at the entrances of shopping centres.
People like to walk on Orchard Road, not even distracted by the labyrinths of shops.
