The National Library has long held a distinguished record for its responsibilities in preserving the cultural and educational traditions of Singapore. The Library's origins stretch back to 1823, when the colony's founder, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles was instrumental in founding an educational body called The Singapore Institute.
The resources of the Library have been accessible to the public since the C19th, and feature many rare, valuable and antiquarian books. The Library moved to a new modern building in 2005, and from there it now supervises a whole network of public libraries and archives located throughout Singapore.
