Since ancient times, the region of Matagalpa has been producing black ceramics, in the style known as "Negro Pottery". The manual process for making black ceramics can be seen in the San Expedito Cooperative, which consists of indigenous local residents. Here, for the manufacture of products, the same technologies are used that many centuries ago.

The women of the cooperative are very friendly about the process of ceramics production.
First they go uphill for clay, then the clay is prepared accordingly, the product is made and burned in an oven, a drawing is applied. Ceramics gains black color due to the smoke accompanying firing. Smoke arises from the addition of special wood chips.
