Chiltepe Peninsulais a nature reserve that is under state protection. Located on the southern shore of Lake Managua and is located 15 km northwest of the country's capital Managua.

Lake Apoyeque, formed in the caldera of the volcano, is one of the objects of the volcanic complex on the Chiltepe Peninsula.

Not far from Apoyeque, in the area of the town of Acahualinca, archaeologists discovered a site of an ancient man under a layer of volcanic pumice. This is the oldest evidence of the presence of homo sapiens in Central America. The monument dates from the fifth to sixth millennium BC.
