Momotombo is a classic volcanic cone. Like from a textbook. Not surprisingly, such a handsome man became the visual symbol of Nicaragua. Momotombo - almost everywhere: on brands and on brochures. And until 1905, he remained one of the most active volcanoes in the country. However, in the twentieth century, he calmed down and fell asleep for 110 years. Only in December 2015, Momotombo woke up and began to throw lava and ash.

The city of Leon was founded by the Spaniards in 1524 on the shores of Lake Managua. Just opposite the Momotombo volcano. A major eruption and earthquake in 1610 severely destroyed Leon. And the residents decided not to restore it, but to build a new city 32 kilometers from the old one. It is still located there. And Old Leon (Leon Viejo) rested under a layer of ash until 1967. Gradually, archaeologists unearthed it. And in 2000, UNESCO included the ruins of the city of Leon Viejo on the World Heritage List as “vivid and well-preserved evidence of the social and economic structure of the Spanish colonial power in the 16th century.”
