Bluefields City
Bluefields is the capital of the South Caribbean Autonomous Region (RAAS) in Nicaragua. It was also the capital of the former Zelaya department, which was divided into autonomous regions of the North and South Caribbean coasts. The city is located at Bluefields Bay at the mouth of the Escondido River.
Bluefields was named after the Dutch pirate Abraham Blauvelt, who hid in the waters of the bay in the early 17th century.
The origin of the city of Bluefields is associated with the presence of European pirates on the Nicaraguan coast of the Caribbean. Pirates used the Escondido River for recreation and repairs. In 1602, one of these soldiers of fortune chose Bluefields Bay as his center of operations because of its tactical advantages. It was a Dutchman named Blauvelt, and the name of the municipality comes from him.
Bluefields is the largest city on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, although the population of the city does not exceed 100 thousand people.

On the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, people of six major national groups live. This is evidenced by the monument installed in the central park of the city.
Bluefields is Nicaragua's main Caribbean port, from which hardwood, seafood, shrimp and lobster are exported.
