The lagoon of Apoyo, located between the departments of Masaya and Granada, occupies the caldera of an extinct volcano. Therefore, its shape is an almost perfect circle with a diameter of 6.6 km. In 1991, the lake was declared a nature reserve with strict laws restricting human activity.
