Phonsavan – the capital of Xieng Khouang provice enjoys a stately spacious valley setting between some low hills. Before the Indochina war, the capital was 25 kilometres from the epicentre of bombing, and was almost entirely flattened. They had to rebuild Phonsavan anew on an adjacent site after the war, because of the devastation and unexploded mines.
The unhurried life of this town in the valley. Along the main street – which is part of the country’s main eastbound highway – there are many tourist-friendly shops, banks, a market, and numerous eateries.
A large number of the people are from the Hmong ethnic minority.
