Proboscis monkeys

Proboscis monkeys (Narsalis larvatus) are unique to the Island of Borneo, and they attract many tourists.

Their extended tubular noses lend them an amusing appeal for visitors.

The monkeys of this species are some of the largest, and their trunk-shaped nose, up to 10cm in length, makes them popular with visitors. Their natural habitat is the mangrove swamp forests, and around lakes and rivers, where they feed on fruit and the leaves of trees - they are very adept at swimming and diving. If the pack is threatened the senior male monkey lets out a warning cry of “ca-how!”. And so one of the local names for these monkeys is “cahow”.
