The fifth sultan of the ruling dynasty, Sultan Bolkiah V (1473-1521) is buried in a tomb on the slopes of the banks of the Brunei River. He is considered one of the country's greatest rulers. Close by on the same slope is the simpler tomb of Sultan Sharif Ali. Local people sometimes visit these tombs, and claim that they sense the spirits of these monarchs.
