It is not only home to His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, but also the seat of government. There are 1788 rooms, a Banquet hall for 4000 people, 257 toilets, 51000 lamps, 18 lifts and 44 of the stairs in the palace complex, including a banquet hall which can seat 4000 people. The palace is open to visitors on three days a year – on the Islamic holiday of Hari Rais Puas, and at the end of Ramadan. When walking through the palace complex, even if you don't see the Sultan himself, you might well meet another member of the Royal Family.

The dense vegetation of the Brunei River almost complete obscures the palace from view. It is built in an Islamic style, but all that can be seen by tourists are the long vaulted roofs and the golden domes. Visitors can also see the formidable guards on duty at the palace gates, where the Flag of Brunei is flying.

You can also view the palace from the Taman Persiaran Damuan Park, a popular place for a riverside stroll. In the park are six outdoor sculptures, carved by sculptors from ASEAN countries and symbolising unity and diversity.
